 Just as physical health helps our body to stay strong, mental fitness also helps us to achieve our goals. When we are mentally healthy we enjoy our life , our environment and the people around us. We can be creative, learn, try new things and take risks. Meanwhile, emotionally healthy individual keep their problems in their perspective and bounce back with setbacks. In short, all the dimensions of health are necessary to call yourselves a healthy individual. In this Blog, lets replenish daily dose of mental, emotional and physical energy in your cup.                                                                                 

There are some goodies for health lets add them in our daily life activities to take a step towards healthy lifestyle;                                                                                                           

Adequate Rest :                                                                                                                    There’s a close relationship between adequate sleep and mental health. For example, if you do not get enough sleep you will be tired and it causes difficulty in coping with daily life activities and low self esteem which eventually leads to stress and depression and that’s a horrible place to be. When an individual is sleep deprived, it affects its amygdala , which gives response to negative stimuli and also causes low  alertness and consciousness.

Gratitude:                                                                                                                                         According to a recent studies always being thankful can improve sleep, mood and immunity. It also lowers depression , anxiety and aging. In addition daily little amount of joy and happiness lowers the risks of heart diseases and stroke.                                             Always being thankful even for the little things helps to improve blood pressure and even reduce inflammation. In short, gratitude can neurotransmitter serotonin and dopamine .

Exercise:                                                                                                                                         In simple terms, exercise is any movement that works your body at high intensity as compared to your normal daily life activities. Actually it is a natural and effective anti-anxiety treatment. It heals tension and boost physical and mental energy and enhances wellbeing by release of endorphins. Anything that gets you moving can help, but you’ll get more benefit if you pay attention instead of zoning out.                                                          Have you ever notice, the sensation of your feet hitting the ground, or the rhythm of your breathing, or the feeling of wind on your skin. So focusing in exercise you ‘ll not only improve your physical condition but you may also be able to interrupt flow of constant worries running through your head.

Creativity:                                                                                                                                  Creativity is an aspect of identity development. It is just not improves your creativity skills but also improves your brain connectivity. The use of art can help a person who has experienced trauma overcome challenges and help them to cope with negative emotions. Even just gardening and sewing releases dopamine, a natural anti-depressant so in this way creativity reduces depression, anxiety and stress.

Learning:-                                                                                                                                        According to the study by University of California learning promotes brain health . It provides mental stimulation that could limits debilitating effects of aging on memory and mind. It may also effects physical structure of brain. These physical alteration affects the functioning of brain, in other words it organizes or reorganizes the brain. It also helps to improve self esteem and self confidence.

 

Progressive Muscle Relaxation

Its a widely used procedure to reduce the physical and mental stress, originally developed by Dr. Edmund Jacobson in early 1920s.

Progressive muscle relaxation (PMA) is actually a muscle relaxing technique that involves the tensing and relaxing the muscles one by one. So, in this way it releases the physical tension which may ultimately ease stress and anxiety.

What is Muscle Tension?

Muscle tension is linked up with stress, anxiety and fear that prepares our body for potentially dangerous situations. The cause of muscle tension may be poor posture or overuse of muscle.

Procedure for PMR:-

The procedure of progressive muscle relaxation is facile. For this you need a quite spot and your body for exercise. And this is how PMR works:

  • Take about 20 to 30 minutes for progressive muscle relaxation.
  • Lie down and sit down and relax.
  • Now tense different muscle groups of the body one after other from top to bottom for 15 seconds and then relax them for 30 seconds. Like:

1-Hands: clench your fists, this will also trains your forearm.

2-Upper arm: Bend your forearm towards ceiling and press your upper arm parallel to your chest

3-Face: Squeeze your eyes tight shut and open your mouth as wide as you can.

4-Neck and throat: Be careful as you tense these muscles. Face forward and then pull your head back slowly, as though you are looking up to the ceiling. And for your shoulder, tense your shoulder muscles as you bring your shoulder towards your ear.

5-chest: Tense your chest muscles by inhaling deeply.

6-Abdomen: Tense your lumbar muscles.

7-Back: Go into the hollow back.

8-Buttocks: Squeeze the buttock muscles.

9-Thigh: Lift your leg straight-up and then repeat it for other.

10-Lower leg: Bend the instep towards floor.

11- Feet: Claw your toes together.

The progressive muscle relaxation has a variety of benefits that includes:

  • Calms your autonomic nervous system for example lowering of blood pressure etc.
  • Decrease muscle tension
